The big price comparison sites have denied claims that they are ripping off customers by hiding the cheapest tariffs from consumers to looking to switch energy provider, at a parliamentary investigation into whether the switching industry is working in consumers’ best interests.

Facing a robust line of questioning from the energy and climate change select committee, the representatives of the biggest comparison websites, including uSwitch, Confused and Compare the Market, were forced to defend their business in the face of claims by MPs that they have been misleading customers by failing to show the cheapest tariffs.

Research finds consumers twice as likely to correctly identify how much money in account if they didn’t use online statements

Consumers are able to better manage and improve their finances when they receive paper bank statements sent through the post rather than just accessing their accounts online, according to the results of a behavioural study published on Monday.

The research exercise – thought to be the biggest of its kind – by London Economics for the Keep Me Posted campaign, looked at the effectiveness of paper versus online statements on consumer behaviour.

Agreement with Telefónica comes a month after rival BT announced it was to buy EE

Sky is moving into mobile phone services for the first time, with a plan to offer connections to its 11.5m customers next year after striking a deal with O2 owner Telefónica.

The move is the latest development in the rapidly consolidating UK telecoms sector and follows BT’s £12.5bn deal last month to buy EE, Britain’s biggest mobile operator. BT had expressed interest in O2 – which it owned until 2001 – but decided to do a deal with EE.

Aspiring first-time buyers hoping to swap landlords’ keys for a set to their own home have been hit by a fresh wave of data highlighting the struggle to buy. Yet is it all bad news for those desperate to own a home?

Last Thursday, housing charity Shelter released a report showing that it will take more than a decade to save for a deposit in some parts of the country. On the same day, Office for National Statistics figures showed that as recently as 1991 65% of 25- to 34-year-olds had bought their own home; this compares to under 45% now.

On Tuesday, Santander launched its “lowest-ever” 10-year mortgage, where monthly payments are fixed at 3.44%. Hours later, TSB waded in with its own “market-leading” 10-year fixed deals, with rates starting from 3.44%.
